"Guilty Verdict in Rushdie Attack: Stabber Faces 30 Years for Brutal Assault on Literary Icon"
A 27-year-old New Jersey man, Hadi Matar, has been convicted of attempted murder and assault for repeatedly stabbing acclaimed British-Indian author Sir Salman Rushdie during a lecture in New York. Matar now faces up to 30 years in prison following a two-week trial in Chautauqua County Court, near the site of the August 2022 attack.
Sir Salman survived the brutal assault but sustained severe injuries, including liver damage, blindness in one eye, and a paralyzed hand due to nerve damage in his arm. The jury also found Matar guilty of assaulting Henry Reese, the interviewer on stage with Rushdie, who received a minor head injury.
Sentencing is set for April 23. During the trial, Sir Salman described sitting on stage at the Chautauqua Institute when he saw a figure charging at him from the right. He recounted being struck by the attacker's "dark, ferocious" eyes.
